Troides Helena
The Common Birdwing Butterfly
Gliding high above the treetops like a small bird, the Common Birdwing (Troides Helena) is a true giant of the Ubud jungle. With a wingspan that can reach 17cm, this protected species is unmistakable. The male is a striking velvety black with hindwings of pure, silky gold. The female is equally large but features a dramatic row of black spots on her golden wings.
The Common Birdwing is not just beautiful; it is a clever survivor. Its presence indicates a healthy, balanced ecosystem. The caterpillars feed exclusively on the Aristolochia (Dutchman's Pipe) vine, a plant that contains toxins. The caterpillars store these poisons, making both the larva and the adult butterfly unpalatable to predators.
Our farm-to-table gardens and the protected wild jungle surrounding our villas create a perfect sanctuary for these vines to grow. This, in turn, provides a safe haven for this magnificent butterfly. Spotting one fly past your balcony is a magical experience, a quiet moment of wonder that our resort is proud to protect.
